Homeowners should make sure they check their level of home insurance cover as Bonfire Night approaches, it has been claimed.

Esure urges people to look at their home insurance policy and make sure it is still valid and that it includes personal liability cover in case of a Bonfire Night incident.

Mike Pickard, head of risk and underwriting, says: "Fire is dangerous wherever it is but on Bonfire Night, the risks are magnified."

Tips from the company on how to have a safe Guy Fawkes celebration include attending a well-organised public display as the organisers will have had to fulfil all the related safety and risk-assessment criteria.

Also, it says that treating a bonfire like a bomb - or an accident waiting to happen - will ensure the right level of care. Bonfires should never be built near fences or trees, it adds.

Esure recently said that homeowners might want to consider checking the roofs and guttering on their home to prepare for any bad winter weather.
