Transport secretary Ruth Kelly has today published a report regarding the relaxation of regulations governing Manchester airport pricing tariffs.
In the report, Manchester is recommended for de-designation, which will allow the airport to set its own prices in the future.
Manchester Airport Groups spokesperson Jonathan Bailey said: "The secretary of state's decision is a victory for common sense and testimony to our commitment to working in partnership with our airline customers to meet their needs and those of our passengers."
He added that the move comes after a period of close consultation with airliners that demonstrated the group has an open business relationship that does not need regulation.
Ms Kelly said in a statement that the deregulation would allow for future expansion and would offer customers real choice in the future.
Manchester is now the country's third largest airport, currently serving around 21 million passengers every year.
