As many as 1.15 million UK car-owners have driven without
car insurance in the past 12 months, according to Sainsbury's Bank.
Statistics published by the financial services firm suggest that 17 to 24-year-olds are the age group most likely to have committed the offence, with eight per cent of those interviewed admitting to driving without cover.
Extrapolated to represent the wider population, this figure suggests that as many as 454,000 drivers in this age bracket have got behind the wheel without insurance.
The firm highlights that the offence can result in fines, a driving ban or even a vehicle being crushed.
In 2005 - the latest year for which figures are available - there were 392,763 court cases brought against people caught driving while uninsured.
Sainsbury's Bank has also recently announced its support for a new driver tiredness crackdown that aims to reduce the number of accidents caused by driver fatigue.
