While marathons are traditionally seen as the crowning achievement for young athletes, professional and amateur alike, a growing contingent of older generations is taking on the 26.2 mile challenge.
Such is the assertion of Alliance & Leicester in a recent examination of the sporting habits of over-50s, which found that it isn't just running that older people are keen to try their hands at.
While almost half a million people in the age bracket have already finished a marathon, there were also a number of other adventurous pursuits undertaken.
These included flying a helicopter, performing on stage in front of a large audience, 4x4 off-roading, scuba diving and attending a music festival such as Glastonbury or the V Festival.
Emma Walkley, current account manager at Alliance & Leicester said: "Today's over 50s don't see age as a barrier to achieving their goals. With people living longer, more and more over-50s are fit and active well into the later stages of life."
She added that it should come as little surprise that older generations are also becoming keen on skydiving and mountain climbing.
The Flora London Marathon takes place on Sunday May 13th, with a record 35,674 participants crossing the line last year.
