Some of the world's top tennis players will compete on the hard indoor courts of Marseilles later this month as the ATP tennis tour comes to the southern French city.

Tennis fans will see Nikolay Davydenko, Lleyton Hewitt, Marcos Baghdatis and Mario Ancic in action as they battle to win the title claimed by French wildcard Arnaud Clement last year.

Taking place at the Palais des Sports from February 12th to 18th, the tournament comes at a critical point in the year, just after the Australian Open where the world number one Roger Federer won his tenth Grand Slam without even losing a set.

Aside from the tennis, Marseilles, France's second largest city, is a fascinating place to go for a city break as it encapsulates much of the French spirit while possessing a unique sense of its own individuality.

As the country's biggest port, sailing is essential to the locals and it is no surprise that many of the local restaurants specialise in freshly prepared fish. There are 23 beaches in and around the city, each offering a number of watersports including sailing and fishing.

The city's architecture is a relic of bygone times and is influenced by its rich history of invaders including the Greeks, Romans and Christian crusaders.
