Motoring enthusiasts thinking of taking a driving holiday to Europe over the May Day bank holiday risk doing so without sufficient insurance cover, according to moneysupermarket.com.
The price comparison site notes that nearly four in ten road users are not aware that their
car insurance could be automatically downgraded from comprehensive to third party while in Europe.
Richard Mason, director of insurance at the site, comments: "If you normally have comprehensive
car insurance, it will come as a shock if you are with one of those insurers who will downgrade your cover for driving in Europe."
He adds that while some drivers will be happy to only have third party cover while abroad, those who are not should consider paying to upgrade their level of cover.
In related news, a study by Moneyexpert recently suggested that up to 350,000 people may have driven without
car insurance cover, putting them at risk of heavy fines if they are caught.
