Despite common perceptions, medical expenses are the largest part of
travel insurance, according to
InsureandGo.
Perry Wilson, a spokesperson for the
travel insurance specialist, explains that many people believe that travel cover is primarily about protection if flights are cancelled and do not consider other elements that may need to be taken into account.
He states that a mishap that results in a broken ankle or leg, for example, can be costly, noting that the average claim for a ski holiday is over £2,000.
"The biggest part of [
travel insurance] is medical - accidental damage to yourself and also personal liability if you cause damage to somebody else," he adds.
Mr Wilson concluded that he believes
travel insurance should be compulsory for when consumers leave the UK.
A European Health Insurance Card, which replaces the E111 form, entitles individuals to reduced-cost, or sometimes free, medical treatment in the European Economic Area.
Consumers shopping around for
travel insurance may find that InsureandGo can offer them a great deal on a policy.
