There is little evidence that individuals with diabetes will suffer memory loss, it has been claimed.

A spokesperson for the Insulin Dependent Diabetes Trust said although new research has been published which pinpoints a link between memory loss and diabetes, the fact the illness has such wide-reaching effects for sufferers means it may not be a simple correlation and increased memory loss could rely on a combination of factors.

She commented: "We don't feel that this particular research proves conclusively that an increased risk of memory loss is caused by the disease."

According to research carried out at the University of Edinburgh, stress raises the risk of memory loss and cognitive decline among older people with diabetes.

The study was carried out with more than 900 men and women aged between 60 and 75 with type 2 diabetes.

Researchers found that brain function slowed in participants with higher levels of the stress hormone cortisol.
