In a difficult consumer environment, men are spending 29 per cent more than women on non-essential items over the course of the month.
Such is the claim of the Fair Investment Company, which has noted that despite perceptions of women as shopaholics, it is in fact men who are spending big on items such as clothes, electrical goods and other luxury items.
Research cited by the group indicates that while women spend £124 per month on non-essentials each month, men are spending an average of £160.
Commenting on the results, Fairinvestment.co.uk spokesperson Daniela Gieseler said: "It is commonly thought that women spend more on fashion and lunches than men, but these results put the footballers' wives stereotype to bed."
In other developments, Apacs, the UK payments association, has recently claimed that Britons have spent as much as £11.9 billion on DIY goods using plastic cards in the last year, showing that homeowners are keen to renovate their home.
