Details of the new Mercedes C-Class have been unveiled at an exhibition in Stuttgart, with its creators insisting that it will outperform the most popular model in the company's range.

Around two million units of the C-Class have been sold since its launch in seven years ago but Mercedes-Benz now believe it has trumped its previous efforts.

Revamped suspension, lights and a sleeker body are among the new features, which also include brake lights that flash repeatedly when the car is braking at high speeds to warn vehicles behind.

Engine power has increased by some 13 per cent improving the car's acceleration.

The German firm said in a statement: "From interior to engines, this is a car designed to respond rapidly and precisely – both to its surroundings and to your needs.

"There's a wide range of engines with increased outputs all round and the agility control package with selective damping system further enhances the car's responsiveness."
