Mexico's tourism industry needs to ensure that it offers attractive holiday options if it is to stay ahead of competition from emerging tourist destinations, it has been suggested.
According to Louise Oram, communications and PR manager at the World Travel and Tourism Council, Mexico is heavily dependent on its tourism industry and must focus on long-term development to ensure that it remains a travel hotspot.
"Mexico is hugely dependent on travel and tourism, which in 2008 is expected to contribute to 14 per cent of its national gross domestic product and represents the tenth largest travel and tourism economy worldwide," she said.
She added that it is under pressure from emerging destinations that are involved in large scale investment programmes.
Independent consultancy firm Oxford Analytica has recently released a report indicating that tourism has had a significant effect on Mexico's economic growth over the past 30 years.
It asserts that the recent credit crisis highlights the country's reliance on North American visitor investment.
