Mexico plans to invest $4.6 million (£2.2 million) in a range of eco-tourism projects, it has been announced.
President Felipe Calderon announced that the funds will be used to promote the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve, a 124,000-acre area that is used by millions of the insects as a nesting ground, according to the Associated Press.
The cash would also be used to reduce logging in the central Mexico region.
"It is possible to take care of the environment and at the same time promote development," President Calderon commented.
Monarch butterflies are a huge tourist attraction in the country and the scheme aims to protect them and their natural habitat.
The Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve was created by presidential decree in 1986.
