Visitors to Japan will soon be able to benefit from a new Michelin guide for Tokyo restaurants.
The move forms part of Michelin's aim to become an internationally-recognised gastronomy commentator.
Some 20 European countries are already covered, while the US also has its own Michelin guide. However, Michelin is now intending to branch out into Asia.
Jean-Luc Naret, director of the Michelin guides, said: "The Michelin guide is pursuing its international development with the launch of the first Michelin guide Tokyo a few months from now.
"Japan and Tokyo in particular seemed the natural gateway to this continent, which is so rich in gourmet food and cooking traditions."
Restaurants are to receive a Michelin rating, with three stars being awarded to eateries with "exceptional cuisine, worth a journey", while two stars are awarded for "excelling cooking, worth a detour".
One star is awarded to restaurants which are "very good" in their category.
The guide is due to be launched in November 2007.
