Many people who have taken out travel insurance and visited Egypt and Turkey in recent years have fallen in love with their culture, it has been claimed.

Tom Hall, travel editor at Lonely Planet, said more people have travelled to these destinations in recent years due to the value for money they offer and one effect of this increase in exposure has been that many visitors have fallen in love with the region.

He commented: "Middle Eastern countries do have a strong pull for European travellers because they do offer an adventure, genuine hospitality and incredible history."

Mr Hall added that Tel Aviv in Israel and Damascus in Syria are the two up and coming destinations of the Middle East.

Meanwhile, Palestinian Tourism and Antiquities announced that 24,000 tourists visited 116 sites in the Jericho region and Jordan Valley last week.
