New research has revealed that a worrying 2.3 million drivers fall asleep at the wheel in the UK every year.
According to the joint survey by road safety charity Brake and Green Flag, seven per cent of 1,000 respondents admitted dozing off while driving.
Despite regular appeals to drivers to 'Take a Break' if tired, 78 per cent said they rely on opening a window or turning up music to fight off tiredness.
Jools Townsend, head of education at Brake, said, 'It's crucial that drivers planning long journeys or driving at unusual hours are aware of the dangers of driving while tired and avoid it by getting a good nights sleep beforehand and taking regular breaks.'
According to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, research shows that up to 20 per cent of accidents on monotonous roads, such as motorways, in Great Britain are fatigue related.
The organisation said that young male drivers, truck drivers, company car drivers and shift workers are most at risk of falling asleep while driving. However, any driver travelling long distances or when they are tired, is at risk of a sleep related accident, it said.
