Figures from the US Census Bureau have shown that 45.7 million Americans did not have health insurance last year, which is 1.3 million less uninsured than the year before, according to a report.

Karen Davis, president of the Commonwealth Fund, told Web MD that whether people had health insurance or not was "just the tip of the iceberg" as some people do have insurance but it is inadequate for cover of medical bills.

Americans can obtain health insurance from employment or government related plans linked to firms like Medicare, Mediaid or the military, according to Web MD.

Insurance coverage linked to employment is going down according to the figures, with 59.7 per cent of Americans having it in 2006 and 59.3 percent in 2007.

The figures also show a link between how many people have insurance and household income or ethnicity, the reports claims.

In related news, this September is Canada's third National Pet Insurance Month, according to Market Watch. According to figures published by the organisation a study by the American Animal Hospital Association said 73 per cent of owners would go into debt to ensure their pet's health.
