Millions of UK motorists could be without valid
car insurance, due in part to customers lying to their insurer, according to research by price comparison site uSwitch.com.
According to the website, ten per cent of customers lie to their insurers when taking out a policy, which can invalidate their cover.
And a further six per cent of motorists on the road are completely uninsured.
The research estimated that over 1.5 million drivers deliberately lie over details such as age and address, and more than 750,000 don't declare driving convictions.
Customers lie about car insurance because it is considered a "grudge purchase", argued Aron Thompson, head of insurance at uSwitch.
"To the consumer, this may seem like a little white lie to save money. In reality, it could end up teaching the driver a costly lesson," he added.
Mr Thompson reckoned the "costly lesson" could cost £1,636 on average to drivers without proper insurance, as the provider has no obligation to settle a claim if the information received from the customer was inaccurate.
