As many as 13.4 million Britons are heading abroad this summer without taking out
travel insurance, Sainsbury's Bank has found.
The firm noted that while many will be looking for ways to save money in difficult economic circumstances, failing to protect themselves overseas could result in them facing substantial costs should something go wrong.
Research from the group indicated that more than a quarter (27 per cent) said they would be travelling without insurance cover, with this proportion rising to 32 per cent in the over-65s age group.
Steve Johnson, head of insurance at Sainsbury's Finance, said: "It's extremely concerning to see how many people are neglecting to take out insurance ... It's a false economy to do without it and should be regarded as a holiday essential."
In earlier research, the group also found that as many as seven million Britons have never left UK shores when going on holiday.
