When it comes to iconic cars of film and television, the Italian Job Minis have topped the poll as the nation's favourite, according to a new survey.

The iconic cars made famous in the 1969 film starring Michael Caine came above the Delorean in time-travelling fantasy Back to the Future.

Knight Rider's talking car Kitt came third in the poll by elephant.co.uk.

It seems that childhood television-watching had the greatest influence on which cars were most loved.

Respondents in their 20s chose 1980s car Kitt, while those in their 30s were more likely to opt for General Lee in the Dukes of Hazzard.

Inspector Morse's Jaguar was the favourite car for those in their 40s, the survey revealed.

A spokesman for the company said: "I think this survey shows that nostalgia guides people's feelings when it comes to their favourite famous cars. The top three also show that people love a bit of excitement when watching cars on screen."
