The use of mobile phones by drivers can be a major distraction and a serious threat to safety on the road, according to a car insurance provider.

Commenting on the possibility of two-year jail sentences for motorists caught using mobile phones, Direct Line stated that it welcomes any legislation that promotes responsible driving.

Motor spokesperson at the firm Carmel McCarthy stated: "The implementation of stricter rules and stronger penalties helps to heighten public awareness and reinforce the dangers of using electronic gadgets when driving."

She noted that research carried out by Direct Line earlier this year suggested that at any given time, one million UK motorists were using their mobile phones without hands-free kits.

According to Zurich, mobile phones were among the £3.9 billion worth of valuables left in cars, which may tempt thieves to break in and steal them - risking a car insurance claim.

Those shopping around for a great deal on car insurance may find that they benefit from contacting InsureandGo, either on the phone or online, to get a quote on a policy.
