Price comparison site uSwitch has claimed that with Londoners spending the most on their partners, males living in the capital may be twice as likely to be proposed to today.

Historically, February 29th has seen roles reversed with women popping the question on the extra day.

For men that have returned a negative reply, social etiquette has dictated that they should provide the unfortunate inquisitor with a pair of silk gloves, making today as good a day as any to ask the all-important question.

The uSwitch report finds that London men spend an average of £2,458 on their partners annually - more than twice the national average.

Richard Mason, director at the firm, said that the poll reveals that the Midlands has the dubious claim to the lowest figures, with three per cent of respondents spending nothing on their partner.

He added that it was nice to see a romantic revival over men's other traditional love - their cars. The average male spends just £191 on extras for their vehicles each year.
