Those considering a DIY project on their home might wish to contact their
home insurance provider prior to getting underway, especially given the fact that more Britons are choosing to "make do and mend" their property rather than move home.
Jason Orme, editor of Homebuilding & Renovating magazine, said that people are more keen than ever to improve their property given the current financial climate and as such are less inclined to move.
"There's a cultural shift towards 'make do and mend', rather than the consumable, 'chuck away' kind of society. People are looking to improve their homes and looking to spend a bit of time themselves doing it," Mr Orme noted.
Figures compiled by UK DIY retailer Kingfisher recently showed that profits at B&Q doubled in the last 12 months, rising from £29 million to £58 million.
In addition, total UK sales increased by 89.2 per cent in the first quarter of 2009 in comparison to the same period in the previous year.
