In difficult market conditions, more airlines are likely to fail in the coming months, one travel expert has warned.
Speaking to TravelMole, Chris Tarry, spokesperson for aviation research and consultancy firm CTAIRA, said that it was inevitable that more airlines will go bust during this period of unprecedented turbulence.
"We have seen 30 airlines fail already, including four or five this summer. Thats something Ive never seen before a failure in the summer," he pointed out.
Mr Tarry added that in today's economic environment, the low-cost air travel model is not profitable enough to keep companies afloat, explaining that operators have to get more seats filled in order to counter the effect of rising fuel prices.
Concluding, he warned that no companies will be immune from the unfavourable climate, which he said will persist throughout 2009.
Among the UK operators to go bust this year are Zoom and XL, both of which cited the rise in fuel prices as the principal cause of collapse.
