A lack of security may lead to people having to make costly home insurance claims, according to Legal & General.

Recent research by the firm suggests that while more than 80 per cent of consumers have a smoke alarm and almost 30 per cent have a burglar alarm, a worrying percentage of people do not check them.

While less than ten per cent stated that they have never checked their fire alarm, more than half of respondents to the firm's Safe as Houses survey admitted to having never ensured that their security alarm works.

Elaine Parks, head of technical services for Legal & General's general insurance, commented: "The survey has helped us gain a better understanding of today's homeowners' security and safety concerns but it is clear that we need to improve awareness of the precautions and checks we all should take to protect our homes."

People were recently advised by Fair Investment Company to make sure that their home insurance covers any expensive presents they may have been given over the Christmas period.

Consumers shopping around for home insurance may find that InsureandGo can offer them a great deal on a policy.
