The number of people who are comparing prices for their car insurance when it comes up for annual renewal has increased dramatically in recent months, it has been revealed.

A growing trend for people to shop around for their car insurance has led to many taking out policies based solely on price, according to Steve Foulsham, technical services manager at the British Insurance Brokers' Association (BIBA).

However, Mr Foulsham warned that individuals should be aware that the lowest priced car insurance will not always mean drivers are getting the best deal, with many products offering insufficient cover for a person's needs.

"Clarity is key and consumers really need to have the right advice and need to make sure they are getting a policy that fits their own requirements," he said.

Figures compiled by BIBA revealed that since the start of the recession, 23 per cent of brokers have claimed to have witnessed a reduction in their number of personal lines clients.
