The number of people who drive without insurance is higher in inner city areas in the UK according to the Motor Insurers' Bureau (MIB).

Lorraine Preston, communications assistant at the MIB, said it was not surprising that the concentration was higher in urban regions as the number of vehicles is more concentrated than in rural areas.

She said that uninsured driving was more linked to young, male drivers and there were many reasons why people might drive without cover including "social issues". Also, she pointed out, many people don't see driving without car insurancefor "the crime it is".

According to Ms Preston the police use "hotspot" data to work out the areas where there are the highest proportion of uninsured drivers and then use number plate recognition to catch those breaking the law. Police have apparently seized more than 350,000 uninsured vehicles this year, with 40 per cent being crushed or disposed of.
