Britain was hit by poor weather with concerns once again rising that the country might be affected by flash floods.

British beaches and holiday sports were quickly emptied on Tuesday as heavy rains and strong winds were recorded throughout the South, Wales and the Midlands.

At Brighton, gales of up to 50mph were recorded, and some southern ports had to be closed due to difficult sea conditions.

The Met Office issued a warning for all of Wales, and expected up to two inches of rain to fall in some parts of the country, about 1.5 inches having been recorded on Tuesday.

The Highways Agency also issued a warning to drivers, warning them to be careful on the roads, and indicating there could be increased problems with cars towing caravans or trailers.

The weather was strong enough to interrupt the Fastnet boat race ending in Plymouth, with about half of all participants having pulled out in the latest stretch.
