"Vision 2010", a plan devised by the Moroccan King Mohammed VI, will aim to increase tourism in the country, a local estate company has reported.

According to Moroccan Sands, Morocco is set to build six new specially built tourist areas, hoping to increase the number of annual visitors to the country to 10 million by 2010.

Under the plan, hotel capacity would also be increased, with 160,000 new beds created for a total of 230,000 nationally.

Morocco hopes that this strong investment in the tourism industry will further drive the employment sector, hoping to add 600,000 new jobs to the economy.

It hopes that the total contribution of tourism to GDP will be of 20 per cent by the set date.

"The King is a Harvard educated economist, so he looked at the country and realised there were a lot children turning 18 soon and he thought tourism was one of the ways to create a lot of employment and try and modernise the country," said Michael Kent, marketing director for Moroccan Sands.
