Rural roads are the most dangerous to drive in, new research by the Centre for Excellence in Rural Safety (CERS) has revealed.
Many of the most dangerous states on the list compiled by the University of Minnesota researchers were popular tourist destinations, particularly Maine, which is a favourite of those who like to visit its leafy towns in the Autumn.
Maine had a staggering 92 per cent of road deaths occur on rural roads.
Other popular states with high danger in their rural roads were Vermont (88 per cent) and Mississipi (82 per cent) as well as West Virginia (80 per cent).
Rural roads were defined as those being outside areas with a population of 5,000 or more. Although only 20 per cent of Americans live in rural areas, these make up for a large proportion of road fatalities.
Among the reasons given was the greater likelihood of on head collisions in two lane roads found in rural roads, which often prove to be fatal, and the state of some rural roads in certain areas.
