With petrol prices increasing steadily, drivers have been advised that opting for a motorbike might be a more cost-effective option.

Commenting recently, Ian Crowder, public relations manager at AA Insurance, said that motorbikes were commonly capable of travelling 70 to 80 miles per gallon, compared to 30 to 40 miles per gallon in a car.

However, he also advised those considering a switch to take a motorcycle awareness test to reduce motorbike insurance premiums.

Responding to statistics suggesting that there was a rise in the number of accidents involving motorbikes, Mr Crowder said taking an awareness course can make riders safer on the roads.

"You can reduce the risk of having an accident by taking a motorcycle awareness course and taking such courses can reduce your insurance premiums," he said.

According to the Department for Transport, there an estimated 1.22 million licensed motorcycles in the UK in 2006/2007.

InsureandGo offers competitive motorcycle insurance options for those interested in owning a bike.
