While there has been a drop in the number of new registrations of motorcycles, demand continues to be much stronger than in the car market, new figures show.
There was a 6.5 per cent drop in registrations of new motorbikes last month, when compared to the same month in 2008, the figures from the Motorcycle Industry Association show.
Registrations of certain types of bike increased during the month - but those taking to the saddle on their new machine should ensure that they have adequate
motorbike insurance in place before heading out on the open road.
According to Motorcycle Industry Association spokesperson Sheila Rainger, the latest findings indicate that people are looking for a motorbike to take the place of a second household car.
"The double whammy of a 2p rise in fuel duty in September, coupled with the reintroduction of the fuel duty escalator from next spring will make [motorbike] use even more attractive," Ms Rainger said.
Last month, the association warned that the government's recent proposals to improve safety on Britain's roads was missing a number of actions to improve safety levels for motorcycle riders.
