The UK motorcycle market stood up well to the difficult period that was 2009, it has been revealed.

Figures from the Motor Cycle Industry Association (MCI) have shown that while overall sales fell by 20 per cent over the last 12 months, there remains public interest in biking and the industry in general remains in a fit and buoyant position.

"The motorcycle industry also wants to see government, legislators, local authorities and transport planners viewing motorcycling as a key alternative to the use of cars and public transport," commented Steve Kenward, chief executive of MCI.

He added that with government support, a scrappage scheme for the motorcycle sector could prove beneficial.

Elsewhere, the Institute of Advanced Motoring (IAM) recently gave its backing to a new government initiative to reduce speed limits on high-risk stretches of road across the UK.

Neil Greig, IAM director of policy and research, noted improved standards of engineering would also help to reduce accident rates.

InsureandGo offers motorcycle insurance for UK bike riders.
