More riders may have been looking for motorcycle insurance to protect their new investment in the form of a so-called "naked bike" in recent weeks.

Over the course of November, the number of new naked bike registrations increased by one per cent, according to figures from the Motor Cycle Industry Association.

Naked bikes are motorcycles with no decorative panels covering the engine and attached pipework - and commonly have a lower seated position than their 'clothed' alternatives.

Steve Kenward, chief executive of the organisation, says he is keen to "persuade the government that motorcycles and scooters are part of the solution to the transportation, congestion and environmental issues that face the country".

In all, more than 100,000 new scooter and motorcycle registrations have been recorded since the start of the year.

With December figures still to be added to the total, that could leave more people seeking motorbike insurance in the run-up to Christmas.
