Drivers should check their tyres on a regular basis to avoid modified car insurance claims, according to organisation TyreSafe.

TyreSafe reported that around 12 per cent of the UK's vehicles drive with damaged tyres, which could significantly increase the risk of an accident.

Figures from the Department of Transport (DfT) reported that over a third of accidents that cause injure are a result of tyres that are defective or not properly inflated.

The legal minimum tread for tyres under the law is 1.6 millimetres, but about 12 per cent are at below 2mm.

A recent crash in Norfolk involving a worn tyre and which ended in the death of a pedestrian was cited as an example by TyreSafe of the problems that can arise from leaving a vehicles tyres unattended.

TyreSafe advised motorists to check their tyres visually every week, and thoroughly on a monthly basis.

Defective tyres should also be replaced immediately, as these can be potentially very dangerous.
