British drivers are mostly concerned with paying the right amount for their insurance rather than getting adequate cover, a new survey has revealed.

Industry magazine Auto Trader polled 4,500 drivers on the most important factor to them when choosing cover, and every single one chose price over the type of insurance.

The type of cover came in second but way behind the price with 44 per cent.

And just over 50 per cent of motorists admitted they often decide not to make any claims at all to their insurance company in order not to lose the no claims bonus they have built up over the years.

The stress of dealing with making a claim to their insurance company was also a main factor when choosing not to make a claim.

Head of marketing at Auto Trader Jonathan Williams suggested customers get comprehensive insurance as a general guideline and advised insurance companies to improve their service. "There is certainly room for improvement," he said.
