Motorists are increasingly looking to purchase smaller cars as they attempt to lower their running costs given the ongoing effects of the credit crunch, new figures suggest.

In news that may well be of interest to car insurancecustomers and other consumers, a survey by automotive intelligence group EurotaxGlass indicates that the values of larger, less fuel-efficient cars continue to fall at faster-than-average rates.

Adrian Rushmore, managing editor of the company, states that the current uncertain economic climate has speeded up a trend of downsizing in the majority of used car sectors.

"Dealers have reported that significant numbers of customers feel coerced into a change of car because their current mode of transport had become a financial drain on their incomes," he adds.

In other news, the Local Government Association recently noted a drop of 72 per cent in the number of abandoned automobiles being reported in the last four years, with the largest drop being noted to have taken place in the East Midlands.
