The removal of speed bumps could reduce the accident rate and help lower insurance premiums, website newcarnet.co.uk has reported.

It would be a popular measure with motorists, as research conducted by the internet portal revealed that 87 per cent of motorists would like to see the traffic-calming measure done away with.

Their removal in the Barnet area saw the accident rate drop by close to 15 per cent.

And further research by automotive warranty specialist Warranty Direct showed that the last ten years had seen an average of one in eight vehicles suffer suspension damage as a result of travelling over the 'sleeping policemen'.

'Usually, councils install speed humps on the grounds of improving safety,' said Massimo Pini, spokesman for Newcarnet.co.uk, referring to the discrepancy between the reason behind the installation of speed humps and their recorded effect.

And the Association of British Drivers also revealed that the maximum height of the bumps currently installed is of 100mm despite official recommendations from the Department of Transport that these should not exceed 75mm.
