Moving house is "an expensive business", with new research showing that Britons can spend around £54,400 moving home in a lifetime.

The study by Abbey revealed that the average cost of moving home in the country is around £16,000 and revealed that UK residents are likely to move between three and four times in a lifetime.

Homeowners spent a collective £28 billion moving house last year and the study also revealed that around two years of salary is spent when relocating to a new property.

Lawyer, estate agent, financial adviser and removal firm fees make up the majority of the moving costs, while stamp duty and the cost of getting their property in a 'saleable condition' bring up the total.

"It's no secret that moving home is an expensive business – in fact, I'm sure it's one of the reasons why people don't move that often," said Nici Audhlam-Gardiner, head of mortgages at Abbey.

"But it's astounding when you consider just how much it amounts to over a lifetime."

With such a significant amount being spent moving into a new property, make sure you're not caught out by unforeseen circumstances. InsureandGo offers great value home insurance to help give homeowners some peace of mind.
