Nearly 500,000 pets have travelled into and out of the UK with their owners since the introduction of the Pet Travel Scheme in 2000, the Times has noted.

The paper explained that the popularity of the rules seems to be growing further still, with 10,117 pets entering the UK during may of this year, compared with the 619 allowed entrance during the first month of the scheme.

However, it noted that there can be considerable costs involved, with passports and vaccinations all costly necessities.

"Pet passports need to be planned in advance if you are determined to take Fido on your two-week European break," explained contributor Liz King.

Furthermore, microchips, vaccinations and anti-flea and tick treatments can cost up to £200, she commented.

She concluded by reminding people that the most important question to ask is whether a pet will actually enjoy time spent abroad.

The Department for Environmental, Food and Rural Affairs has explained that there are no requirements for pets travelling directly between the UK and the Republic of Ireland.
