Damage caused to property by neighbours is costing UK homeowners a collective £93.4 million every year, according to new research.

A study by Abbey found that some 543,000 suffered damage as a result of accidents caused by neighbours.

Examples of damage caused by neighbours include throwing a ball through a window and breaking a fence.

While the average damage per household was around £172, nearly one in 20 homeowners suffered damage in excess of £1,000.

Londoners were the most likely to encounter damage caused to their home by their neighbours, while the Welsh had the fewest incidents.

"Not all damage caused to people's homes by their neighbours is malicious, in many cases this type of damage is accidental," said Prasad Shastri of Abbey.

He added: "However there are often misconceptions about whose insurance is to be used to claim for it."
