New York is set to be the top shopping destination for Christmas shopping this year, the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) commented today.

The very favourable exchange rate, more or less of two dollars to the British pound, should see a surge of UK travellers to the Big Apple in order to complete their Christmas shopping, argued ABTA.

Airlines such as easyJet and Virgin Atlantic have already begun selling tickets for their winter flights.

The nature of US holidays, with one major date such as Thanksgiving coming shortly before Christmas, are also likely to draw in visitors, said ABTA.

'There are sales in the states after Thanksgiving, which tends to be the end of November, so the end of November and beginning of December will be extremely popular this year,' said Frances Tuke, spokesperson for ABTA.

ABTA also recommended travellers thinking of crossing the Atlantic to book their tickets well in advance, as Christmas is one of the peak seasons.

Booking in advance will ensure travellers get the best deals, whereas leaving it to the last minute might risk them not finding what they want, said the trade association.
