Locals on the west coast of New Zealand's south island will be sampling nature's gastronomic offerings on March 10th as the 18th annual wild foods festival gets underway.

The festival began in Hokitika in 1990 when a local resident began offering people the chance to taste her home-made rose petal brew, a native flower wine.

The March date also coincided with the 125th anniversary of the birth of the town and a whole host of other local food producers began to reveal their unique home-made foodstuffs.

But now festival-goers are more likely to try more global dishes such as grasshoppers from France, beef intestines from the Philippines and bratwurt sausages from Germany.

Some 1,800 people attended the first festival but this expanded 15,500 last year, when a number of new wild foods were introduced such as fish eyes, venison tongue, cicada and pistachio ice cream.

But for those who don't see themselves as a wannabe I'm A Celebrity competitor, the festival also has a host of entertainment such as live bands, comedians, mime artists, stilt walkers and dancers.

For those aged under 36 who are off on an extended trip, InsureandGo offers a range of destination specific insurance deals fitting the policy to your needs.
