The newly inaugurated Zvartnots international airport in Yerevan is set to become a bridge between east and west, as it will connect the UK with Armenia.
British Airways will support initial traffic to Zvartnots as it will operate three weekly flights to the new airport from London, responding to strong demand.
Armenia is seen as a destination with strong potential for tourism to the region as well as a potential business hub for East and West due to the country's surging economic growth in the past few years.
The airport already handles 60 international routes, used by major airlines such as Air France, Lufthansa and Aeroflot, to destinations such as Paris, Athens, Munich, Vienna, Frnakfurt and now London.
Zvartnots is already estimating it will handle 2 million passengers in 2007, its first year of operations.
And airport authorities also predict a stronger British presence in the short term future: 'Zvartnots currently connects with London, but we are certain that in a few months it will be possible to fly to other British cities,' said Marcelo Wende, general manager for Armenia International Airport, the company in charge of the airport.
