It is important to continue to campaign to raise awareness over stroke and other illnesses in the UK.

Andrea Lane from the Stroke Association said ensuring a stroke sufferer gets prompt treatment can make all the difference in terms of the extent of the damage caused and it is therefore imperative that awareness continues to rise.

She commented: "Growing awareness and medical advances have dramatically improved the chances of not just surviving a stroke, but making a good recovery."

Britons worried about these problems might like to take out comprehensive health insurance to ensure their loved ones are provided for after they are gone.

The Department of Health launched its Act F.A.S.T. campaign in 2007 and since its introduction there has been a 55.5 per cent increase in the number of emergency 999 calls regarding strokes.

Meanwhile, new research by the department showed that 84 per cent of the public remember the campaign and are more informed about what to do if they suspect someone is having a stroke because of it.
