Research scientists in Scotland have developed a new transplant procedure which could help diabetes sufferers - a development which could impact on the life insurance policies of patients.

Dr Victoria King, research manager of Diabetes UK, said new islet transplant treatments are being used to help those who would otherwise require pancreas transplant surgery.

She commented: "It won't just isolate an islet for surgery, but will isolate them for research purposes and there are quite a few scientists working in the Scottish area on the islets, so that will help their research."

According to a report published by the organisation entitled Diabetes in the UK 2009, since 1996 the number of people diagnosed with diabetes has increased from 1.4 million to 2.5 million.

By 2025, it is estimated that over four million people will have diabetes in the UK. Most of these cases will be type 2 diabetes, due to an ageing population and rising numbers of overweight and obese individuals.
