New '57' registration cars will be available from September, and drivers have been urged to make sure they do their research before they come into effect.

Research from website esure.com has revealed that 35 per cent of UK adults would not research obtaining an insurance quote before buying a new car.

And a further 43 per cent would not even research the new car's insurance group, which determines the cost of premiums.

A further 26 per cent admitted they were likely to spend less than an hour before choosing a new car and model, while more than the 19 per cent that said they would carry out a thorough research.

"As a nation we're always out for a bargain and value for money, yet motorists aren't putting this into practice when it comes to buying a new car," said Colin Batabyal, director of underwriting and business development for esure.

Mr Batabyal added that motorists should do their research before buying, and shop around for car insurance, finance deals and the best price.
