A new drug which is more effective at eliminating small cell lung cancer than chemotherapy has now reached the second-stage trials phase.

Britons worried about the possibility of contracting lung cancer might like to invest in a comprehensive life insurance policy.

Rosemary Gillespie, chief executive of the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation, said this is welcome news for those suffering from the disease in the UK.

She commented: "We're always very encouraged and very pleased to see potential new drugs in the pipeline, particularly as there are so few treatments for lung cancer."

According to the authors of the research from Imperial College London, a potential new drug for lung cancer is effective on small cell lung cancer - a more lethal variant of the disease - and has eliminated tumours in 50 per cent of mice.

Figures published by Cancer Research UK showed lung cancer is the second most common cancer in the UK.
