Police in Lancashire have used new high-tech devices to check number plates and help them in catching car insurance dodgers.

Checkpoints in the county were fitted with automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) technology, to catch drivers without insurance, tax or MoT.

The use of the new technology was a joint initiative of local police authorities, the Driver Vehicle Licensing Agency and HM Revenue & Customs.

Police were able to scan thousands of vehicles thanks to the new checkpoints, and remove from the road those vehicles they felt necessary.

'The ANPR system allows us to identify vehicles that we suspect are being used by criminals and we can keep track of them on the borough's roads,' said police constable Marc Rigby.

The technology has also been tested in Sussex, Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex and across the East Midlands, becoming and is increasingly becoming a necessary tool in the catching of drivers of car insurance.
