Many UK couples who are planning to tie the knot in the year ahead are looking to go on a honeymoon which is steeped in culture and heritage, it has been claimed.

Frances Tuke, a spokesperson for ABTA - The Travel Association, said newlyweds will be looking to go on a honeymoon that is steeped in history and culture, as well as being a once in a lifetime experience.

She commented: "Sri Lanka is right on the Indian Ocean, it's a very spectacular, special island steeped in culture and history which is pretty unrivalled."

According to Caxton FX, overseas weddings have soared in popularity, with around one in six Britons choosing to head abroad for their special day.

The firm noted the ten most popular overseas wedding destinations include Sri Lanka, Cyprus, the Caribbean, New York, Greece, Thailand, Mauritius, Italy, Turkey and the Bahamas.
