The success of the government's car scrappage scheme has prompted one motor expert to call for a focus on the environment in any future incentives.

Dr Ben Lane of WhatGreenCar.com noted scrappage has helped keep UK car manufacturers afloat during a difficult financial period and that future schemes such as this should look to offer similar financial rewards, but with a greater focus on environmental impact.

"As capital cost is one of the key factors in vehicle choice, purchase incentives will always be well received by consumers who [in the main] are put-off lower-carbon options if price is compromised," he commented.

Elsewhere, the Volkswagen Golf was recently named the 2010 Business Car of the Year by BusinessCar magazine.

Readers of the magazine voted for the Golf because of its high level of specifications which come as standard, its safety record and build quality, as well as its mix of versatility, value for money and efficiency, the publication noted.
